Ondřej Novotný is one of the best european master artisans focused in glass sculpture. It is not too surprising that glass had an important influence on him from a very young age. As a child, he would spend a lot of time wandering around the studio set up in his home, an experience that would make him want to be part of this glass community. He enjoys every aspect of glass as well as the demands, the challenges and joys that working with a material with such movement and intensity can provide.
The results are something that always manage to amaze him. Over the years, his excitement for the unlimited possibilities of the material developed into a passion, not only for glass but also for those involved in the process of creation. As well as exploring his own designs and ideas, Ondřej worked alongside many designers from around the world. This was a great challenge that influences the materials he uses as well as his designs nowadays.
Cane work and cup casting techniques are used to create his solid glass sculptures. Cane work is the process of making cane, rods of glass with color. It also comprises the use of cane glass in the blowing process to add complicated colorful patterns to the glass object.
Ondřej Novotný’s most recent works, the ‘Speculum’ series, is his testament to simplification and optical qualities. Ondřej enjoys exploring the illusions of complex patterns contrasted with the optical qualities of solid glass. The surface reflection on the object as well as within the single symmetrical bubble creates an optical illusion of a complex moving pattern.
This is an inherent quality of glass that he always enjoys, when making the piece and when it is on display. This visually complex and often mathematically puzzling pattern, contrasted with the simple curves and optical qualities of solid glass, can have a hypnotic effect.
