Portugal is an exceptional country when you talk about arts and crafts. There are so many Portuguese Talented Artisans but sometimes they don’t have the deserved recognition.
Vítor Agostinho is one of the most renowned Portuguese talented artisans, with relevant experience in the industry. The designer focuses his work mainly on ceramics, taking a very hands-on approach that explores the manufacturing process to the full.
The personalization and self-production is the orientation of his work, as a result of an investigation in this area. This two measurements, mass and self-creation, conceded him the one of a kind chance to grow new strategies of forming. He had exhibited his work in different places, more recently is was invited to be at Best of Europe room at Homo Faber 2018, in Venice.
Eneida Lombe Tavares is one of the young Portuguese talented artisans. She has a degree in Product Design from Caldas de Rainha in Portugal. Her extraordinary projects, out of time and aesthetic has influence by her Angolan roots. The objects are simple but, mixing cultures and bringing the two continents together.
Eneida uses different patterns exploration, irregularities may be found in her unique pieces too. The artisan works with traditional and modern, with a passion for basketry. An art that is highly regarded on the European scene. She was featured in the 2014 new talents of the European Ceramic Contest.
Estúdio Mulato is a project of Eneida Lombe Tavares with another Portuguese talented artisan, Jorge Carreira.
Samuel Reis is a Portuguese product designer, he born in Lagos. He went to ESAD (Caldas da Rainha) in 2011, where he graduated in Industrial Design. Three years later he achieved his master degree in Product Design, in the same school.
The Portuguese talented young artisan entitles himself as a re-collector. He uses nature as the root of the creative process, by observing and exploring everything that surrounds him.
He aims to identify characteristic forms and elements that already exist in nature and unique properties of the matter. These can be used or integrated into the conception of objects, appealing to nature as a creative agent. In is own words he follows the rule: “Nature suggests, I apply”.
He was been at Homo Faber 2018 in Venice, where he exposed his work at the Best European room.
Catarina Nunes is a very recognized Portuguese talented artisans. Born in Luanda em 1978, she made her degree in “Design – Technological Ceramic” in ESAD. After, Catarina Nunes, gain a schoolship for Tama Art University in Tokio, where she had a formation in “Contemporary ceramic“. She also had study “Design of ceramics and glass” at the Central England University, Birmingham.
During some time Nunes, that passed a great part of her life near the coast (Azores, Japan, England) had an aesthetic inspiration related to an aquatic sensibility. Recently she had been in Namibia desert where she was influenced by the wind, the aridity and rocked surface. In her personal projects, the artisan explores mainly areas like sculpture, installation and art education.
Fernando Brízio is notable among the Portuguese talented artisans. Graduated in Product Design, since 1996 from the Faculty of Fine Arts in Lisbon, the city where he lives and works. His work has developed for industrial purpose but, also he handmade for small-scale production. Like for exhibitions, sets, interior and public space for companies and organizations such as Droog, Schréder, Torino World Design Capital or Fábrica Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro in Portugal.
Brízio is also a well-established professor and head of the Design Product Master’s degree at ESAD (Caldas da Rainha). MUDE – Lisbon’s Museum of Design and Fashion have included collections from the designer. In his pieces practice a consistent and finely crafted body of work hinges on a challenging relationship between object and user and the creation of designs that invite different readings and appropriations.
The Portuguese Product Designer Jorge Carreira was born in Guimarães in the north of Portugal. He received his degree in Industrial Design in 2011 and in 2015 he graduated as Master Degree at ESAD (Caldas da Rainha)
Jorge Carreira always had interested in the process and experimentations in Design. He wants to become more autonomous so, he likes to construct the entire set. The artisan his very perceptive, we love to think about and built every piece individually. His work including pieces in diverse kinds of material, like glass, ceramic or even pottery.
Carreira was in Studio Mulato with the Portuguese Product Design Eneida Lombe Tavares.
Ricardo Leal a is an architect, designer and maker. His formation was made in Architecture School (Faculdade de Arquitectura da Universidade do Porto) in 2010. After he went to Paris until 2014 he came back to Lisbon, Portugal where he is currently working with wood and living.
He has worked with the ancient art of marquetry in some of his creations. But also used others techniques, like wood carving.
